Overview
Your 11D10N Kilimanjaro Climb Marangu 5-Day Route & Safari Adventure begins with your arrival in Moshi, where you can relax and enjoy the serene surroundings with views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The real adventure starts on the second day as you begin your climb from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut, hiking through the lush rainforest. Over the next few days, you’ll ascend to Horombo Hut and then to Kibo Hut, passing through various terrains from heathlands to the alpine desert, with incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, is a challenging yet rewarding experience. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll begin your descent back down, passing through the same scenic trails to Moshi.
From here, the safari portion of your journey takes over. First, you will head to Tarangire National Park, known for its large elephant population and striking landscapes, where you will enjoy game drives and the chance to spot a variety of wildlife. Next, you will explore the world-famous Serengeti National Park, home to the Great Migration and many iconic species, including lions and cheetahs. Your safari adventure will continue with game drives across the vast plains, offering unforgettable encounters with the Serengeti’s rich wildlife.
You’ll then proceed to the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can witness one of the best-preserved ecosystems in the world. The crater is home to a wide range of wildlife, including Tanzania’s last remaining black rhinos and large prides of lions. Your adventure concludes with a scenic journey back to Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will reflect on your incredible experiences before departure.

Day 1: Arrive Tanzania – Moshi
- Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), meet our airport representative/driver.
- Transfer to your lodge in Moshi for an overnight stay.
- Accommodation in Moshi provides an ideal starting point for your adventure, strategically located with the best view of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
- Freshen up and unwind in the lush gardens before enjoying a delicious meal.
- Take in the remarkable view of Mount Kilimanjaro while strolling in the tropical garden.
- Get a good night’s rest in preparation for the start of your trip itinerary in the morning.
- Overnight stay in Moshi.
Day 2: Moshi – Marangu Park Gate – Mandara Hut (hiking distance: 11km, hiking time: 4-5hrs) (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
- Depart from Moshi town and drive approximately 45 minutes to Marangu Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro.
- Complete necessary paperwork and registrations at the park gate.
- Commence hiking through the rainforest from the park gate to Mandara Hut.
- Stop midway for lunch during the hike.
- Consider a side trip to Maundi Crater, which is about 15 minutes away, to enjoy scenic views of the surroundings, including Kenya and Northern Tanzania.
- Restrooms with running water are available along the trail.
Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (hiking distance: 10km, hiking time 5-6hrs) (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
- Enjoy breakfast and pack for the next leg of the journey.
- Begin hiking to Horombo Huts, passing through lower heath land with small shrubs as the predominant vegetation.
- Take a break halfway through the hike for lunch.
- Marvel at the amazing views of Mawenzi along the way.
- From Horombo Huts, catch glimpses of the summit of Kibo.
- Upon arrival at Horombo Huts, unpack and prepare fordinner.
- Restrooms with running water are available at Horombo Huts.
Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (hiking distance:10km, hiking time 6-7hrs) (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
- Enjoy breakfast and consider capturing stunning sunrise photos if awake before dawn.
- Pack your belongings and commence the hike to Kibo Hut.
- The first half of the day’s hike passes through upper heath land.
- The second half crosses the vast saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo, featuring an alpine desert landscape reminiscent of the lunar surface.
- Pay attention to signs of altitude sickness along the way.
- Note that there is no running water available at Kibo Huts.
Day 5: Kibo Hut – Summit – Horombo Hut (hiking distance: 16km, hiking time 15+hrs) (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
- Wake at around midnight for a light breakfast and prepare for the summit ascent.
- Begin the hike to Uhuru Peak, departing around 1:00 am.
- Aim to reach Gilman’s Point, situated on the Crater Rim, around 7:00 am. Take in views of the crater from this vantage point.
- Continue hiking for another 2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
- After reaching the summit, begin the descent back to Kibo Hut.
- Collect your belongings at Kibo Hut and cross the saddle again, heading towards Horombo Hut.
- Enjoy dinner at Horombo Hut and get some well-deserved rest after an exhilarating summit experience.
Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Park Gate – Moshi (hiking distance: 18km, hiking time: 6-7hrs) (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
- Wake up as usual and pack your belongings.
- Descend to Mandara Hut, where you’ll have lunch.
- Continue the descent to the park gate, where your transport back to Moshi will be waiting.
- Overnight in Moshi.
- It’s recommended and highly appreciated to give tips to your guide at the hotel.
- At the park gate, successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Climbers who reached Stella Point (5685m) are issued green certificates, while those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates.
Day 7: Tarangire (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
- After breakfast, pack your bags and depart with your driver guide for Tarangire National Park via Arusha town.
- Upon arrival, enjoy refreshments at a welcome table set up either at the entrance gate or nearby, featuring tea, coffee, cold drinks, and snacks while your guide briefs you on the area.
- Following the refreshments, embark on an afternoon game drive with one of the experienced guides, exploring the wild and beautiful landscapes of Tarangire National Park.
- Return to camp after the game drive to freshen up and relax.
- In the evening, choose between going on a night drive or heading straight to the dining area for dinner and drinks by the campfire.
- Overnight stay in Tarangire National Park.
Day 8: Serengeti (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
- After an early breakfast, depart for the Serengeti National Park, known for its vast plains, wildlife, and iconic landscapes.
- En-route, you have the option to visit a Maasai Village to explore Maasai culture and participate in tribal activities, or visit Olduvai Gorge, also known as the Cradle of Humanity, where the museum showcases humanity’s evolutionary journey from its origins in East Africa.
- Upon arrival at the Naabi Gate of Serengeti National Park, enjoy refreshments at a welcome table set up either at the entrance gate or nearby, offering tea, coffee, cold drinks, and snacks while your guide briefs you on the area.
- After refreshments, embark on an afternoon game drive with one of the experienced guides, immersing yourself in the great Serengeti and the Lion King Safari experience.
- Overnight stay in the Serengeti National Park.
Day 9: Serengeti (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
- Spend a half day relaxing in the endless plains of the Serengeti, known for its unparalleled beauty and as the home to the Great Wildebeest Migration.
- Enjoy game drives, encountering the vast herds of plains game such as wildebeest, zebra, and antelope, as well as predators like lions and cheetahs among the scattered kopjes (rocky outcrops).
- Explore the varied landscape of the Serengeti, from open grass plains in the south to savanna with scattered acacia trees in the center, hilly wooded grasslands in the north, and extensive woodlands and black clay plains to the west.
- Choose from several options for structuring your day in the Serengeti: Start with an early morning balloon excursion followed by a picnic breakfast OR begin the day with a morning game drive and a picnic breakfast in the bush, returning to camp for lunch.
- Alternatively, you can enjoy breakfast in camp and head out for an afternoon game drive with a picnic lunch, returning in the mid-afternoon.
- Despite sharing vehicles on a Safari Package basis, efforts will be made to accommodate your preferred structure for the day.
- Overnight stay in the Serengeti.
Day 10: Ngorongoro (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
- After an early breakfast, pack your bags and depart with your driver to Ngorongoro Crater.
- An early start is recommended to avoid crowds, as the park gate opens at 6:00 am.
- The Ngorongoro Crater is a large, unbroken caldera formed by a collapsed volcano, offering spectacular scenery and game viewing opportunities.
- Look out for the large lions in the area, known for their size due to the abundance of prey.
- The caldera is 600m deep, 16km across, and 265 sq km in area, providing a habitat for a diverse range of wildlife.
- Witness Tanzania’s last remaining black rhinos grazing on the open grasslands, along with other animals such as lions, cheetahs, wildebeests, elands, zebras, and gazelles.
- Birdwatchers can enjoy sightings of flamingos and other bird species feeding at Makat Soda Lake.
- Afternoon drive to your lodge for an overnight stay.
Day 11: Departure (Breakfast)
- Enjoy breakfast at your lodge before bidding farewell to the team.
- Make your way to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
- While the memories of your adventure will last forever, the team hopes you will return one day to retrace your steps.
